Feds Unseal 43-Count Indictment Against Los Baja Deo Crew, Alleging Fentanyl Pipeline Across Three Boroughs

Federal prosecutors unsealed a sweeping indictment Tuesday charging 14 alleged members and associates of the Los Baja Deo street crew with running a fentanyl and cocaine pipeline that stretched from stash apartments in the Bronx to street corners in Brooklyn and Queens, capping a two-year investigation that culminated in predawn raids across the city.

Eleven of the defendants were arrested Tuesday morning as hundreds of Drug Enforcement Administration agents and NYPD detectives fanned out to more than a dozen locations, according to the U.S. attorney's office for the Eastern District of New York. Two others were already in state custody on unrelated charges, and one remained at large as of Tuesday evening.

The 43-count indictment, returned by a grand jury last week and unsealed in Brooklyn federal court, accuses the crew of distributing fentanyl, heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine since at least 2019. Prosecutors said the group operated a packaging mill inside a Soundview apartment where workers stamped glassine envelopes with the crew's blue devil logo, and they tied the product to at least six fatal overdoses.

"This crew built a profitable business on addiction, and it guarded that business with guns," the U.S. attorney said in a statement. "Today, that business is closed."

Investigators said they seized roughly 12 kilograms of fentanyl, 8 kilograms of cocaine, nine firearms and about $340,000 in cash during the raids, including a safe house in East New York where agents reported finding a loaded pistol inside a child's bedroom closet. The indictment adds firearms counts that carry mandatory minimum sentences alongside the narcotics conspiracy charges.

The NYPD's chief of detectives said the crew's retail spots, several of them steps from public housing complexes in Jamaica, generated a constant stream of complaints from residents. "The phones at these locations never stopped, and neither did the violence that followed the money," the chief said, adding that detectives linked the group to three nonfatal shootings last year.

At the federal courthouse on Cadman Plaza on Tuesday afternoon, magistrate judges ordered nine of the defendants held pending detention hearings scheduled for later this week. Defense lawyers for two of the men argued their clients played minor roles and asked for release; both requests were denied. Each defendant faces a maximum sentence of life in prison on the top count.

According to court papers, Los Baja Deo formed in the Soundview section of the Bronx in the late 2010s and took its name from a slain founding member. The crew allegedly expanded by absorbing smaller drug sets, and prosecutors quoted a wiretap in which an alleged leader boasted that his product "walks out the door by itself."

Prosecutors said the investigation remains active and asked anyone with information about the remaining fugitive to contact the DEA's New York division. An initial conference before the district judge assigned to the case is expected within 30 days.
